Bolt's Impact

Way better materials, for a way better world

At Bolt, we believe that it is up to all of us to own our impacts, so we took charge to make better, more sustainable materials.

We are inspired by nature to disrupt the way we make the products that we use in our daily lives. Our goal is to create materials that not only improve the human experience, they also benefit the environment.

By taking a holistic approach to our process and pioneering greener practices from the get-go, we aim to improve the overall impact of our materials and create a better world.

Our Guiding Principles

A comprehensive approach to the product life cycle

We are inspired by nature’s circular and efficient processes to consider every aspect of the life cycle – all production inputs, energy and water use, and product end-of-life. Our goal is not just one improvement, but reduced environmental impact and positive social change throughout the whole process.

Sustainability built in from the start

At Bolt, we start by excluding highly hazardous chemistries and unsustainable practices from the onset of product and process development. We evaluate the remaining options and choose the best balance of sustainability, performance, and function.

Data is in our dna

At our core, we are scientists who know the power of data. We invest in science, research, and third-party testing to inform our decision-making and drive measurable progress on our impacts.

Sustainability is a journey, not simply a destination

We recognize that there is always room for progress, and are constantly evolving our work. We set near-term and long-terms goals to illustrate where we’re headed next and in the future.

Building a World Class Supply Chain

From the supply chain side, our expectations are high. We select best-in-class partners who share our vision for better materials and a better planet.

Our materials

MyloTM

Material Properties and Impact

MyloTM is a mycelium-based replacement for synthetic and natural leathers. To make MyloTM, we use less hazardous chemistry, design to reduce life cycle impacts, and require strict ethical labor and production practices.

B-silkTM protein

Material Properties and Impact

Our proprietary beauty ingredient is biodegradable and perfectly suited for clean beauty formulations. B-silkTM protein is made using simple inputs like water, sugar, yeast, and salt. The resulting protein is EWG verified to meet strict safety standards and Leaping Bunny Certified to be cruelty-free.

microsilkTM

Material Properties and Impact

MicrosilkTM fiber is a vegan silk that is made using clean inputs like water, sugar, yeast, and salt. Our technology moves away from petroleum-based polymers, toxic processes, and non-biodegradable fabrics, and towards renewable inputs and closed-loop production.

Driving Change

Our Corporate Responsibility Team

Bolt’s Director of Corporate Responsibility, Libby Sommer, began her career at the US Environmental Protection Agency, where she collaborated with numerous consumer goods companies on Green Chemistry-driven improvements to their products. After eight years at EPA, she worked in the apparel and footwear industry with Nike and Lululemon among other brands developing their chemicals management and environmental programs.

Now, Libby guides Bolt’s Corporate Responsibility strategy and provides environmental and social impact direction to the teams bringing our materials to life.

We engage with our research, process development and product development teams through several channels including our internal Corporate Responsibility Committee. This cross-functional team brings expertise from across Bolt to define our corporate responsibility goals, and ensure accountability and goal progress.
