A SHARED VISION.

In 2009, a bioengineer, a biophysicist, and a biochemist came together with an optimistic idea that through biotechnological innovation, they could change the world. They founded Bolt Threads with the goal to develop better materials for a better world.

Meet the world-class team that’s helping bring that vision to life.

MEET OUR LEADERSHIP

Dan Widmaier, PhD

Chief Executive Officer and Founder

Dan is fascinated by finding the right conditions to grow things. Dan has carefully tended Bolt’s growth since 2009, using his passion and expertise to lead the company through technology development, expansion, and financing. He earned his Ph.D. in Chemistry and Chemical Biology from UC San Francisco, where his graduate research involved designing genetic circuits to control microbial organelles.

David Breslauer, PhD

Chief Scientific Officer and
Co-Founder

David leads technology innovation at Bolt, creating and incubating biomaterials for improved consumer products. His obsession with biomaterials began with graduate research on silk during his Bioengineering Ph.D. at UC Berkeley and UCSF. David has an orange belt in Krav Maga and is a great admirer of stencil graffiti.

Sue Levin

Chief Marketing Officer

Sue oversees our marketing strategy and deep brand storytelling for our technologies, framing our work at Bolt in a broader context and translating scientific research to consumer needs. She also heads up Bolt's beauty and personal care business. She started her career in journalism before moving to Nike, where she was Global Director of Women’s Sports Marketing, and later US Women’s Brand Director. Sue left Nike to co-found lucy, a pioneering women’s activewear brand. As CEO, she led lucy through a successful transition from dot-com to multi-channel retailer. Sue brings to Bolt a deep understanding of the consumer landscape and need for industry evolution. Before you challenge her to a friendly game of frisbee, be warned that she was an ultimate frisbee national champion.

Randy Befumo

Chief Financial Officer

Randy oversees Bolt’s finance function, using his creative analysis of details to forecast, finance, and determine strategy for the business. He brings over 20 years of experience in finance and investment, most recently as Chief Financial Officer of Eventbrite where he helped to guide the company through a successful IPO. Prior to that, Randy served as Director of Research, analyst, and portfolio manager at Legg Mason Capital Management for 15 years. He lives in Larkspur, California with his wife, two kids, two cats, and one dog, plus the occasional visit from a clever family of raccoons.

Deanna Chechile

General Counsel

Deanna is the guardian of Bolt's proprietary technology and helps the company navigate the complex field of intellectual property and commercialization. Before joining Bolt, Deanna was the SVP, General Counsel, and Secretary at Shiseido and Bare Escentuals. Prior to Shiseido and Bare, Deanna spent eight years in private practice. She received her BA from Smith College and her JD from Boalt Hall School, UC Berkeley where she graduated Order of the Coif. In her free time, Deanna enjoys taking her Rhodesian Ridgebacks on hikes, organic gardening, and travel. Her travel highlights including Eritrea, Zambia, Morocco, and Zimbabwe. She also owns 25 acres of land in the New Mexico high desert, right across from the Georgia O'Keeffe homestead.

Sholeh Esmaili-Montoya, SPHR, SHRM-SCP

VP of People & Places

Sholeh is the person behind our people – she builds the programs that support the performance of our people and culture and provides leadership to our People Operations, Workplace Operations (Facilities and EH&S) and Information Technology teams. She has over 15 years of HR experience, including building and leading the teams that were pivotal in growing Phacil, an IT services management company, from 80 to 600+ employees. She's also an instructor in rotation at UC Berkeley Extension for Recruitment, Selection and On-boarding within their Human Resources Management Certificate program and holds a Master's in Public Administration from CSU East Bay. People aren't the only thing she builds up: outside of work she enjoys Lego construction with her daughters and traveling to new places to experience other cultures.

Troy Rhonemus

VP of Manufacturing Operations

Troy guides Bolt’s effort to make the largest global impact through production and manufacturing. He bridges the science and commercial worlds by scaling our technologies to a global and industrial level. Before joining Bolt, Troy served as COO and EVP at nutraceutical company ChromaDex and spent 14 years at global food corporation Cargill in various roles, from Technical Director to Business Process Manager. He holds a master’s degree in Chemistry from Ball State University and enjoys traveling and mountain biking with his family.

Jamie Bainbridge

VP of Product Development

Jamie engages the best minds in the textile industry to tackle every aspect of material and textile development. Before joining Bolt Threads in 2016, her past experiences included Research and Development and Innovation work at both Nike and Patagonia, and serving as Director of Product, Textiles and Sustainability for Nau Clothing, a brand focused on sustainable textiles and manufacturing practices. In her role at Bolt, Jamie oversees the creation of Mylo and is responsible for its high quality, softness and drape, and ability to take on any color or emboss. She works closely with Bolt’s partners including adidas, Kering, lululemon, and Stella McCartney to ensure Mylo can be used in their products just like animal or synthetic leather, but with a fraction of the environmental impact. Jamie served as the Chair of the Advisory Council for the Outdoor Industry Association Sustainability Working Group.

Nick Toriello, PhD

General Manager of Mylo

Nick sets the strategic direction and commercialization roadmap for Mylo as the head of the Business Unit. Prior to joining Bolt, Nick was General Manager for Novozymes in San Francisco, where they developed next-gen tools for discovering improved industrial enzymes. He was co-founder and VP Operations at Allopartis Biotechnologies, a biofuels company that Novozymes acquired. Nick holds a Ph.D. from UCSF/UC Berkeley in Bioengineering and is passionate about sustainability and product development. He also enjoys rock climbing, running, and wine. His ideal evening would be a dinner party with Greta Thunberg, Jane Mayer, Michael Lewis, and Dr. Jennifer Doudna.

Josh Kittleson, PhD

VP of Research

Josh Kittleson shapes the research and early development strategy for Bolt, taking commercially relevant opportunities from ideas to reproducible prototypes. With an academic background in biological systems and engineering principles, including a Ph.D. in Bioengineering from UC Berkeley and UCSF, Josh has nearly a decade of industrial experience building and managing teams across diverse technical disciplines. He applies his experience navigating deep technical stacks spanning several fields to bring new materials to life. While not formally trained in the kitchen, Josh can prepare a decent meal from a variety of cuisines, with favorites including French, Thai, Spanish, and Japanese. Just don’t ask him to bake anything.
